Which Direction?

Do we love other Christians? That’s the question John wants us to ask as we read 1 John 2:7-11. Love for others serves as the sign that God has saved us and that we are united to Jesus by faith. John gives us two polar opposites: Love for other Christians and Hate for other Christians. And then he wants us to ask, Which direction are we headed in? And in the process John shows us that we need the church in order to grow in a joyful assurance of our faith.

The Test

To be unsure about something important is stressful and difficult. In a similar way, to be sure of something that is untrue can be very dangerous. God does not want us to be unsure about our salvation. Neither does he want us to have a false sense of security if we aren’t saved. God gives us means by which we can be assured of our salvation because he wants us to experience the joy of knowing that we are saved and loved by him. One of these means is the fruit of keeping God’s commandments and living a life of obedience to him.

Forever On Our Side

We often think of Jesus in terms of his past ministry – what he did when he lived, died, and was raised – and his future ministry – what he will do when he returns one day. But what about his present, right now, moment by moment ministry? Jesus is our Savior right now and his present ministry continues to save us.

Hide and Seek

We find joy in knowing that we are loved despite our sin. We find support in others who can pray for us and encourage us. We feel less alone in our struggles with sin. We get a fresh taste of God’s grace and forgiveness. And we become transformed into compassionate and gracious people to others around us.

It’s Personal

Joy is not found in simply knowing the right answers, but in knowing a person. Just as the accuracy of our faith is wrapped up with Jesus actually coming as a person, so to the continuing joy of our faith is found in knowing the person of Jesus.

Filling Up

When we think about what it means to be a Christian, probably some of the first words that jump to mind are faith, repentance, following Jesus, etc. How often are the first words that jump to mind when we think about being a Christian that we may have life and have it abundantly. This abundant life does not mean that we have an abundance of things in this life, but that we have Christ. He is meant to be the source of all our joy in this life.

The Great Reversal

There are so many things in this life that can cause us to weep. Broken bodies, broken relationships, broken hopes, a broken world, and many more things cause us to suffer under the weight of life in a fallen world and bring tears to our eyes. This is why Jesus first words (question) on the heels of his resurrection are both so shocking and comforting… “Woman, why are you weeping?”

There are moments in life where we must entrust things into the care of other people. What we are doing in those moments is taking something valuable and committing it to someone else to care for. We are telling that other person; I trust you to take care of this. Jesus had committed his whole life to living for the Father. He shows that even in death he is committed to doing God’s will and that even death cannot separate him from the loving care of his Father.

To finish something gives us a sense of accomplishment, enables us to rest, and frees us to simply enjoy life for a little bit. Jesus completed the greatest work on the cross. Jesus achieved the greatest accomplishment on the cross. And because of that we are free to rest and live under the words… “It is finished!”
