The Comfort of Endurance
Kyle Kauffman
We are called to endure in our faith and we can live with confidence that we will endure because God is the one who enables our endurance. His grace enables us to resist falling away. His grace enables us to see through lies that undermine our faith. His grace is what gets you through to the finish line. If your faith is currently in Jesus then you can take comfort in the fact that God has got you this far and you can trust that he will continue to enable you to endure.
1 John 2:26-29
The Challenge of Endurance
Kyle Kauffman
We are called to endure in our faith. Not everyone does this. There are people who seem to have faith that turn away. This is especially tempting in an age where deconstruction of faith is seen as heroic. God calls us to endure in our faith and not give way to the people or pressures that might tempt us to walk away. We should recognize that endurance in our faith is continuing evidence of God’s grace in our lives, just as we should take seriously God’s call to us to endure and not give up.
1 John 2:18-25
Proper Foundation of Love
Ben Armstrong
We are creatures made to love. But what we love and how we love are eternally consequential decisions. John warns us not to love the world or the things of this world. God, the creator of all things good, is to be our guide as we learn to love others and things with a proper foundation of a love for God. It is when we seek to love things that are not of God or love things in a way that is ungodly that we lose joy. But when we learn to love the way God has intended, we find security and joy that the world cannot provide.
1 John 2:15-17
The Joy of Confidence
Brandon Fisher
It’s easy for us to live defeated lives. We see our sin and feel defeated. We see the hurt and suffering in the world and feel defeated. We see the evil in the world and feel helpless in the face of it. A defeated life is not a life that is full of joy. God wants us to live with a faith-fueled confidence in this life.
1 John 2:12-14
Which Direction?
Kyle Kauffman
Do we love other Christians? That’s the question John wants us to ask as we read 1 John 2:7-11. Love for others serves as the sign that God has saved us and that we are united to Jesus by faith. John gives us two polar opposites: Love for other Christians and Hate for other Christians. And then he wants us to ask, Which direction are we headed in? And in the process John shows us that we need the church in order to grow in a joyful assurance of our faith.
1 John 2:7-11
The Test
Joel Wood
To be unsure about something important is stressful and difficult. In a similar way, to be sure of something that is untrue can be very dangerous. God does not want us to be unsure about our salvation. Neither does he want us to have a false sense of security if we aren’t saved. God gives us means by which we can be assured of our salvation because he wants us to experience the joy of knowing that we are saved and loved by him. One of these means is the fruit of keeping God’s commandments and living a life of obedience to him.
1 John 2:3-6
Forever On Our Side
Kyle Kauffman
We often think of Jesus in terms of his past ministry – what he did when he lived, died, and was raised – and his future ministry – what he will do when he returns one day. But what about his present, right now, moment by moment ministry? Jesus is our Savior right now and his present ministry continues to save us.
1 John 2:1-2
Hide and Seek
Kyle Kauffman
We find joy in knowing that we are loved despite our sin. We find support in others who can pray for us and encourage us. We feel less alone in our struggles with sin. We get a fresh taste of God’s grace and forgiveness. And we become transformed into compassionate and gracious people to others around us.
1 John 1:5-10
It’s Personal
Kyle Kauffman
Joy is not found in simply knowing the right answers, but in knowing a person. Just as the accuracy of our faith is wrapped up with Jesus actually coming as a person, so to the continuing joy of our faith is found in knowing the person of Jesus.
1 John 1:1-4
Filling Up
Kyle Kauffman
When we think about what it means to be a Christian, probably some of the first words that jump to mind are faith, repentance, following Jesus, etc. How often are the first words that jump to mind when we think about being a Christian that we may have life and have it abundantly. This abundant life does not mean that we have an abundance of things in this life, but that we have Christ. He is meant to be the source of all our joy in this life.
1 John 1:1-4
